AMSTAR has been further developed to evaluate systematic reviews of randomized and non randomized studies on medical interventions. The newly upgraded AMSTAR 2 retains 10 areas from the original tool, upgrading from 11 to 16. The response categories are simpler than the original AMSTAR, and it comes with a more comprehensive user guide. The overall rating is based on weak links in key areas.
