AMSTAR tools assess the quality of Systematic reviews (SRs) and the underlying primary studies based on the accuracy, completeness and transparency of methods used. AMSTAR appears to be the most widely used with over 19,000 Google Scholar citations for primary AMSTAR studies and many independent reviews. The original AMSTAR, published in 2007 has been cited over 4400 times.

These tools were designed for critical appraisal yielding an explicit reproducible assessment of internal validity, adherence to reporting standards, generalizability, risk-of-bias, and conclusions.

The AMSTAR website (www.amstar.ca) is visited on average 390 times daily and remains a widely used platform for methodological appraisal. It has approximately 23,000 registered members, many of whom complete their appraisals directly within the site using embedded assessment tools that support structured and standardized evaluations. To date, the platform has facilitated roughly 133,000 unique assessments reflecting its broad reach and sustained engagement within the evidence synthesis community. In 2025 alone, approximately 34,000 appraisals were completed, further demonstrating its continued relevance and active use in advancing high quality critical appraisal practices.
